The agroclimatic indices, which determine different classes of suitability, were integrated in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to create thermal and moisture regions. The agroclimatic zoning map was obtained by superimposing the maps related to moisture and thermal regimes. Age Defying Apricot Probiotic Cleansing Milk. It contains a nut with an extremely hard shell. The second area is Tassademt (hereafter Mountain), a site located 70 km NE of Agadir in the first foothills of the Atlas Mountains, which is characterized by its extreme climatic conditions. Basic data in determining this similarity were the amount of annual rainfall, the annual temperature, the annual minimum temperature, the winter maximum temperature, the minimum temperature of the coldest month, the mean annual minimum temperature, and the annual maximum temperature. Finally, Figure 9 (obtained by overlaying all the above-mentioned maps) presents the agroclimatic zoning for the argan tree. It adapts well to hostile environments, and it can even be irrigated with salt-rich water [29]. Consequently, damage by frost should be avoided when tropical species are exploited. Figure 4 shows the areas where the annual mean maximum temperature surpasses 23.0°C, determining the suitable area. Climatic interpolations were made using the “Interpolate to Raster” tool, within the “3D Analyst” extension of the GIS of the same program, following the Ordinary Kriging interpolation method. In Figure 8 the mean annual minimum temperature of −5°C is shown. Brightening. Clear Skin. This can lead to more soil erosion and desertification. Review articles are excluded from this waiver policy. The country borders to the north with Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay; to the south with Chile and the Atlantic Ocean; to the east with Brazil, Uruguay, and the Atlantic Ocean; and to the west with Chile (Figure 1). The tree is an important source of forage for sheep, goats, and cattle, but horses reject it. Considering the increase in arid conditions worldwide, together with the prediction for fewer rainfalls, argan trees could be used for greenery purpose and to reduce climate change effect. A threat to the argan forests. It was introduced for cultivation into Algeria, Israel, Kuwait, Libya, the semiarid Southeast Spain [10], and Mexico [6]. Argan cultivation could reconvert the olive areas by interspersing argan and olive trees to reach a more lucrative production per hectare. The ratio of total unsaturated to total saturated fatty acids is around 4 : 5. The climatological characteristics of the original area were analyzed, and the resulting bioclimatic indicators were extrapolated to the Argentine territory. Argentina’s climatic diversity is remarkable due to both its vast territory and distinct geographic factors that influence the climatic characteristics of the different regions. By creating an account you agree to the Hunker, Purdue University Extension: New Crops as a Possible Solution for the Troubled Israeli Export Market, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations: Argania Spinosa. Table 1 shows some climatic characteristics of area of origin of the argan tree. The suitable areas cover the eastern and center part of the country. 2018, Article ID 9262659, 10 pages, 2018. https://doi.org/10.1155/2018/9262659, 1Climate and Water Institute, INTA, Las Cabañas y Los Reseros, s/n, Castelar, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2Laboratorio de Cultivo Experimental de Plantas y Microalgas, Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biología Experimental, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 3Instituto de Micología y Botánica (INMIBO), Universidad de Buenos Aires-CONICET, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 4Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Ambientales (CINEA), Facultad de Ciencias Humanas (FCH), Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (UNICEN), Campus Universitario, Paraje Arroyo Seco, s/n, Tandil, Argentina. Berbers in some parts of Morocco used the argan tree for timber and fuel. The 23°C isotherm covers the north and a large section of the center of the country. The suitable and very suitable zones delimited for argan in Argentina are characterized by low and variable rainfall (100 to 400 mm) and mild winter temperatures. The values which best indicate the thermal requirements of this species and can be used as equivalents are the bioclimatic variables: annual mean temperature, annual mean maximum temperature, annual mean minimum temperature, winter mean maximum temperature, minimum temperature of the coldest month, mean annual minimum temperature, and annual rainfall. Argan wood cannot be destructed by insects, and it has been used for centuries in carpentry, charcoal, construction, and utensils at local level. Down Icon Down. Annual rainfall is scarce (232 mm) and concentrated from October to April. Investors, on the other hand, frequently fail because they lack adequate information concerning the risks and uncertainties related to these ventures. The argan forest is particularly sensitive to climate change and it was ignored as a specific biotope for a long time. O. M’Hirit, M. Benzyane, F. Benchekroun, S. M. El Yousfi, and M. Bendaanoun, D. Rivera and J. Argan tree or Argania spinosa is a medium-sized, spiny evergreen tree commonly grown in Southwest Morocco for its highly valuable oil. For example, it mentions a preserved specimen in Arizona, USA, at 34.5°N/111°W; in Spain at 37.5°N/9°W, 38.21°N/10.25°W, and 40.5°N 3°W; in United Kingdom at 52.5°N/3°W; in Kenya at 1.5°N/39°E; and in Morocco at 31.5°N/9°W and 31.5°N/3°W. The first index used to analyze the thermal factor was the annual mean temperature, measured over a period of 30 years. If you are lucky enough to live in one of these tropical climes, knowing how to grow macadamia trees successfully can provide you with a lifetime supply of these desired nuts. This composition is particularly adept for nutritional, cosmetic, and medicinal uses. Avoid very sandy soil soil and waterlogged ground. Near Essouira, Morocco - E028EB from Alamy's library of millions of high resolution stock photos, illustrations and vectors. Monthly average temperatures are 40°C in summer and 3°C in winter; but they can drop to −5°C. The argan tree is a slow growing tree exclusively endemic in the dry lowlands of Southwest Morocco. The argan tree life span frequently exceeds 200 years. According to [13], the tree dies with frosts of −2°C, although according to [18] it can tolerate −5°C. image caption The argan tree is native to Morocco We are in the Moroccan countryside, some 25km (15.5 miles) inland from the port city of Essaouira, halfway down the country's Atlantic coast. Put water unto the soil mixture, sufficient to make the soil moist. Notwithstanding, this is pioneering work because the agroclimatic zoning for the argan tree in Argentina has never been done before. Argan Tree Icon Argan Tree. Figure 3 presents the annual mean temperature >18°C. Transplant the seedlings into 6-inch pots once they have produced a pair of leaves and before their tap root is damaged by the pot. As a result, many growers have ceased investing and olive farms have been abandoned. Argan is a saline-sensitive plant [14, 19] and adult trees do not adapt to the higher salinity associated with dry areas. Under arid conditions there is another area classified as suitable with constraints which covers parts of the provinces of San Mendoza, San Juan, and La Rioja. In less than a century, more than a third of the argan forest has disappeared. The area studied was the Argentine Republic. An optimal area can be identified to the west of the country and another one in the Patagonian region. These types of trees, in their indigenous areas, take up in order to 39 inches of rainfall each year. The argan tree (argania spinosa) is found exclusively in Morocco, particularly the south-western region. Table 2 shows the agroclimatic indices that define each class of agroclimatic suitability. It is a major source of income for the local population where the argan trees grow. Considering that the species has not yet been introduced into Argentina, the climate of its original area was studied in detail. In some parts of Morocco, goats can be found perched on the branches of argan trees, nibbling away at their fruit and leaves. Macadamia nut trees can begin bearing in 6 to 7 years, so it is important … they are stopping/slowing desertification by preserving soil. This research was supported by the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) of Argentina. This index is calculated by averaging the 12 normal monthly temperatures over the 30-year period. The argan (Argania spinosa L.) tree is indigenous to southwestern Morocco. When it is lower than 17.5°C a nonsuitable area is delineated; in the 17.5 to 22.0°C range the area is suitable, while temperatures above 22°C define marginal areas. The tree is in threat of extinction due to clearance, poor germination quality, and the use of the timber as fuel. Different classes of suitability were characterized: nonsuitable, marginal, suitable, and optimal. Another index is the annual mean maximum temperature, which should surpass 23.0°C to ensure an appropriate thermal regime during the growing period [14]. The species needs neutral soils (pH of 6.5 to 7.5) and, although soil quality is not an issue, drifting sands and water-logged soils must be avoided. Afterwards, these were processed by the Geographic Information System (GIS) tool of the Arc-GIS 9.3 program. eubiona.com Traditionnellement, l'huile d'argan s'obtient par la pression manuelle des amandes du fruit de l'arganier. Most crops commonly show recognizable differences in many of their properties within their area of distribution. Farmers tend to be cautious and avert the risks involved in developing new crops. Grow argan from seed planted in 3-inch plastic pots. The argan (Argania spinosa L.) belongs to the Sapotaceae family and it is the only species of the genus Argania. In the coastal areas where argan trees grow, there are temperate oceanic influences with moderate temperatures (annual average in Agadir is 18.5°C; minimum temperature of coldest month: 7.4°C) and low annual and daily thermal amplitude [14]. To create the maps, a series of previously interpolated bioclimatic variables were used. According to [21], the winter mean maximum temperature should be higher than 17.5°C. Successful introduction of this species in Argentina depends on the degree of climate similarity in the natural area compared to new areas with agroclimatic suitability. This index represents the average of the maximum temperatures from June to August, over the 30-year period considered. The essential fatty acids fight against drying and the loss of elasticity which encourage the appearance of wrinkles. For this reason, the Moroccan government seeks to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI) on argan oil [8]. This work can be updated by further incorporation of complementary information. The wood is hard, heavy, and durable, and it results in good charcoal and firewood. I have only a few seeds left. This is responsible for the low minimum temperatures in all the national territory. It is therefore reasonable to assume further degradation of the soil when intertree areas extend further due to lack of rejuvenation of argan trees. The nuts are later collected by farmers to produce oil. The oil is also used for illumination and soap. Figure 6 shows the winter mean maximum temperature. One of these factors is the great latitudinal development: Argentina expands from 21°46′ (province of Jujuy) in the north to 55°03 in Cape San Pío (province of Tierra del Fuego), in the south. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E and it has been reported to lower cholesterol levels, stimulate blood circulation, facilitate digestion, and strengthen the body’s natural defenses [6]. Argan trees in nature receive up to 39 inches of rain per year. In Morocco's southern mountains gold grows on the region's argan trees. A suitable area with constraints under irrigation is in the provinces of San Juan, La Rioja, and Catamarca, and small ones can be found in Mendoza and San Luis. The argan tree does not exist in Argentina and, consequently, there are no commercial plantations that can be used to compare the agroclimatic zones delineated in this paper. Very suitable, suitable, and marginal areas for this species were delimitated. One of these areas is Admine Forest (hereafter Coastal Browsing, 30°26′54.13′′N and 9°32′49.90′′W, located in the suburbs of Agadir city, 5 km inland, 107 m of altitude), which different authors [22–24] consider as the ecological optimum for the species and the center of its distribution area. Germination does not occur with temperatures below 10°C, and the optimum germination temperature is 25°C [16], with night temperatures above 21°C [17]. If rainfalls are below 100 mm, the area is deemed marginal under rainfed conditions and in the 100–200 mm range, it is a suitable area. Argan oil was used in Berber folk medicine for centuries to treat skin conditions, rheumatism, and heart disease. Argan tree plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance and the economic situation of the population. This agrees with the agroclimatic zoning map presented in this paper, since the suitable area reaches the north of San Luis province (approximately 33°S). According to [13], the argan tree prospers in desert or arid (Bw), steppe or semiarid (Bs) climates, between 20 and 32° latitude. These isolated populations are considered relicts of a wider distribution in the past [5]. Argan is perfectly adapted to the region’s harsh environment, with the ability to survive extreme heat (over 50°C), drought and poor soil. Consequently, argan can be used as a repopulation species in semiarid and arid zones. This zone, considered suitable, is influenced by the north wind year-round, which is responsible for the high temperatures over the year. Argan trees grow in poor soil in their native habitat, according to the University of Arizona's Campus Arboretum website, and are not fussy about soil quality. The fruit has a green, fleshy exterior that ripens to a bright yellow. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Summer is particularly harsh because temperatures are inordinately high and rainfall is scant (385 mm) and almost totally absent. It will take … Saadia’s son in law was teaching in a town called Ait Daoud in Essaouira province and he came to know this gentleman well a few years ago. Argan trees bear fruit after five years and can survive for 250 years. 2 The argan tree The argan tree of the family Sapotaceae is only endemic in Morocco, where argangrovesnaturally coverabout8000 km2. The limits were delineated by the 100 and 400 mm isohyets [13]. FAO, “Ecocrop,” (1993-2007) Available at: F. Bani-Aameur and J. Sipple-Michmerhuizen, “Germination and seedling survival of Argan (Argania spinosa) under experimental saline conditions,”, Y. Mizrahi and A. These are areas with mostly lithosols and regosols soils, associated with saline soils on lowlands. The maps were obtained using a series of previously interpolated bioclimatic variables. Eight classes of agroclimatic suitability under dry-subhumid, semiarid, and arid climatic conditions were delineated. In the mountains and inside the continent, the thermal amplitude reaches higher values and the minimum temperatures of the coldest month fluctuate from 3°C to 7°C. argan trees influence the soil underneath significantly, while the soil in intertree areas is less protected and more degraded. Edible argan oil is obtained from lightly toasted kernels, and it is becoming increasingly popular in gastronomy due to its exotic aroma and fruit-like flavor, reminiscent of a mixture of nuts, hazelnuts, and sesame seeds. A GI would mean that only the argan oil prepared from seeds collected in Morocco, with the appropriate rules of production, could be sold as such under that name [7]. Argan trees grow to 8–10 m (26–33 ft) high and live up to approximately 200 years. The 10.0°C isotherm diverts to the south influenced by the oceanity factor, which is conspicuous in the province of Buenos Aires. Morocco’s climate is Mediterranean, with Atlantic and Saharan influences. 3. It grows wild in semi-desert soil and is extremely well adapted to drought and other environmentally harsh conditions. Now, she is in the process of growing her own Argan trees. The nut-shells are also burned for cooking. This site was selected because it is situated in the proximity of the species’ natural distribution limit. Argan oil presents an exceptional percentage of essential fatty acids, one of which is linoleic acid (omega 6, the most essential of all) ensuring the functions of repair and defence of the skin. Some isolated populations can be found northeast of Morocco, 400 to 700 km away from the main ones: in Berkane in the northern slope of the mountain Beni-Snassen, close to the Mediterranean coast (800 ha), and in the Bou-Dreg plains (Kariat Arakmane), in the eastern Rif of the high valleys of Oued Grou, close to Rabat (50 ha) [2]. The argan tree used to grow throughout North Africa, but today it only grows in southwestern Morocco. Age Defying. Plant the seedlings in a mixture containing three parts soil to one part peat moss and one part humus. In some regions, it is already damaged, and its future is endangered by prolonged drought periods and desertification. Did you know? A very important factor is the species’ resistance to cold, since it can hinder its cultivation in a specific area. Any grass or bushes in the area of the tree's shade can also die from direct exposure to the sun. $13.99 Age Defying BioActive Berry Fruit Enzyme Mask. The climate of a geographic location can be depicted by long-term averages or “Normals,” which are defined as 30-year averages of a climate element. Argan oil is obtained from the seeds of the argan tree traditionally pressed by hand. The color is darker and the odor stronger than argan cosmetic oil because of the previous toasting of the kernels. This model may be applied in any part of the world, using the agroclimatic limits presented in this paper. The 18°C isotherm covers north and part of the center of the country. In this work, a set of long-term averages, covering a range of climate elements, for the period 1981 to 2010 was assembled. Recently, strict conservation measures have been implemented to prevent its disappearance [13]. Aspects of growth, such as development and death chances by excess or deficiency, were analyzed. Copyright © 2018 Silvia L. Falasca et al. Argan tree (Argania spinosa) seeds are the source of argan oil, which is used as a cooking oil and in the cosmetics industry. These were obtained by interpolating the data collected in the 125 meteorological stations across the country (National Meteorological Service). sous bioclimat aride à forte influence océanique (plaine du Souss, Maroc),”, Z. Natural vegetation is scarce, except for the dominant A. spinosa, and the climate is temperate due to marine influence. Subespontánea en la Península Ibérica,”. The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest. Figure 7 shows the minimum temperature of the coldest month (July). B. Ruiz, “Argania spinosa L (Skeel) Sapotaceae. Within the summer months, drinking water the Argan tree, especially if you understand that will the soil it will be planted in is regarding to run dry. These areas have regular drought periods, which could be mitigated by argan tree since it not only provides forage for goats but also produces argan oil for local consumption and for sale. It is an open forest where argan is the predominant vegetation type and broad gaps are covered with a grass community. He is the author of several guidebook chapters and the complete "Sunshine Guide" guidebook to Gran Canaria. The successful introduction of this species in Argentina depends essentially on the degree of similarity of climate in the natural area to that of the new areas with agroclimatic suitability. Some of them are in the following countries: Algeria (1.33°N/36.16°W), Netherlands (52.25°N/5.60°E), USA (34.14°N/118.05°W and 34.00°N/118.00°W). The minimum temperature of the coldest month (in Argentina, July) is, by definition, the minimum monthly temperature occurrence over a 30-year period (normal) and it should be above 3.8°C [2]. To prevent lethal effects, the annual mean minimum temperature (that represents the long-term average daily minimum air temperature observed during a calendar month and over the year) cannot be lower than −5°C [18]. Argan tree plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance and the economic situation of the population. Down Icon Down. The GBIF [27] cites only 34 occurrences with georeferenced data. Slightly larger than an olive, the argan fruit is usually harvested in July and August once it falls to the ground. Eight classes of suitability were delineated: very suitable, suitable, suitable area with constraints (under dry-subhumid, semiarid, and arid regime) and under irrigation, marginal, and nonsuitable areas. The effects of different treatments, such as container type, planting medium and seed … Argan trees that are deprived of water will get into a dormancy condition and won’t bear any fruits. The argan tree is disseminated from Safi (north) to the Drâa River (south), and isolated populations extend as far as Tindouf, well inside the Western Sahara. For instance, they sometimes put at risk the sustainability of the ecosystem where implantation is purported, or they ignore the agroclimatic requirements of the species. Although Argentine territory extends towards the Tropic of Capricorn (23°27′S), it lacks tropical climates. Efforts are being made to introduce and evaluate the potential of argan tree (Argania spinosa L.) a native of Morocco, for greenery applications under Kuwait’s environmental conditions. Flowering occurs mainly in spring, with great differences among individuals, and with a secondary peak in autumn. Sign up here as a reviewer to help fast-track new submissions. For the gardener, growing trees indoors may have nothing to do with that, and will mostly just be a challenge to see if they can avoid spider mites on a parlor palm. The dry season is inordinately long, resulting in a short growing season. … We look forward to using only our own fruit to make our oil some day. The climate is characterized by two gradients: decreasing precipitation with increasing temperature from north to south and from west to east [20]. Make a healthy soil combination by combining one part humus, one part peat moss, and 2 parts loam. This area, considered suitable, reveals how the incoming cold air from the Polar Front projects to the north. According to [13], this species flourishes in desert or arid (Bw), steppe or semiarid (Bs) climates, between 20 and 32° latitude. To the extent that the species is unable to withstand cold, the annual mean minimum temperature, the winter mean maximum temperature, and the minimum temperature of the coldest month were analyzed. Apart from the economic value, Argan trees play a huge role in the natural ecosystem. Argan trees that do not receive enough water will go into dormancy and not produce any fruit. To determine agroclimatic suitability, the average climatic data of all the meteorological stations (1981–2010) were analyzed. This index is a very important constraint, because lower temperatures can be lethal to argan tree. It has small and oblong leaves that occur in clusters, small flowers that are yellow green in colour, and fruits that are hard and green. The north and northeast present optimum conditions with an average temperature of 7°C, while the suitable area (where minimum temperatures in July range from 3.8 to 7°C) covers the center of the country and reaches the center of the Buenos Aires province. An agroclimatic zoning model was developed. The crown has a circumference of about 70 m (230 ft) and the branches lean towards the ground. The extreme eastern limit of the country is located at 53°38′W, in the town of Bernardo de Irigoyen (province of Misiones). Currently, the olive industry has been curtailed due to rising production costs (approximately 40% annually) and low foreign currency (dollar) values. The aim of this work was to design an agroclimatic zoning model to define the potential growing areas for Argania spinosa in Argentina. These researchers maintain that argan tree is one of the few surviving relict-breed species of the Tertiary Period, which spanned from 65 million to 1.8 million years ago. The climatic requirements and tolerances of the argan tree have been outlined in relation to the environmental conditions of their natural habitat. The suitable areas are those where the average minimum temperature is above −5°C. Some of these new crops ameliorate the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 (greenhouse effect), which turns fertile lands into deserts by increasing temperature and producing drought [15]. The tree is also popular as a shade tree and it is useful for soil conservation and windbreaks. The critical period, as far as water is concerned, is between the preflowering and ripening phases, and this usually corresponds to the period with the highest rain scarcity in the original areas. The tree has several mechanisms that restrain water loss: it reaches the deepest layers of soil during dry season, it can close its stomata during the day, and it has water reservoirs in its trunk and branches [10]. Water your argan tree during the summer if its soil is in danger of drying out. Argan is a thermoxerophile and its edaphic requirements are scarce [28]. It is important to highlight that the nonsuitable areas present two or more of the constraints indicated in Table 2. 2. The resulting boom of this particular species can lead to large investments and campaigns promoting the need for its domestication and industrial scale commercialization.
